The whole reason, as you know I am sure, there were southern dems in the first plac was because the democratic party was the party of unions. The south had a lot of unions (not anymore though!), but their racism was smore important to them than their jobs, so they voted with the Republicans who told them they would drag their feet on integration. Then the republcian party started busting the unions. Most of the car companies in the south today are not union. The southern poor never figured out they were being used.
