Dude, I'm ok with the history of the Southern Vote. Whatever I am, it's never been a racist nor a homophobe. Here's what your missing. I am a consummate classic liberal who's never considered himself a republican. I do know that many folks who don't mind associating themselves with the republican party, don't mind thinking of themselves as classic liberals too. Classic liberals were all about basic Republican notions of individual economic freedoms. Today, the accepted term for a classic liberal is "conservative." Today, "conservative" is also often twisted to mean racist (which you have done, when in fact racism simply crosses lines extensively, and always has). You can write over and over again that I believe things which I simply do not. It's your right. If you want to separate it out as you wish, you will. If Democrat vs Republican doesn't matter, just liberal vs. conservative, and conservatives of either party are defined by their racism, and all 85% of Republicans voting for the civil rights act must be liberals, then have it your way. Just know that this classic liberal doesn't fit into your I think ever changing boxes. And look again at your numbers. When you remove the south, Democrat support goes from 61% to 98%, while Republican percentages only move from 81% to 85%. Perhaps It was southern Democrats, not southern Republicans, who made up the bulk of the southern opposition, it would seem to me. Dan B.
