..then Johnson said "he wasn't going to be the first president to lose a war" and just let the meatgrinder continue for Nixon. Nixon had a "secret plan" to end the war, but, somehow it just kept going for several more years. That's the thing about these pissing match guerrilla wars - they are much easier to get into than to end. We blew up more of Vietnam than we'd blown up in all of WWII, but those N. Vietnamese just kept coming. They set a high bar for everyone after.
