I believe that's true, and the tulipmania was probably similarly small. I think the importance of these events is that they reflect the extreme of general public psychology. I think the borrow and spend (and speculate) insanity has finally peaked. Now we move toward the save and hoard extreme. The US economy cannot function if that happens. There was a 72 year bear market in Holland after the tulipmania, FWIW.
