The only time war should be justified for Americans is when we are defending ourselves from attack. Iraq was not that.

An absurdly simplistic position in both sentences. There are obviously many times when American national security or other interests are at stake yet we haven't been attacked [yet]. In these instances it may be necessary to engage before the fact to prevent a problem from becoming bigger. Iraq was such an event but there have been many.

There are also instances where it is in our interest to assist other countries.

The best example may be Reagan's use of the CIA to defeat the Soviets in Afghanistan which contributed to the end of the Cold War. But the Iraq War is another good example. There are probably 100s.

These are not like, for example, the Mexican War, which was, effectively, the act of an expansionist United States. These are examples of America defending itself through preemptive action.
