Shlurker -

I believe that what you have is a static address that is assigned using DHCP. So the ISP associates the MAC address of your computer with that IP address. In order for them to continue to assign that specific address to you, they need the MAC address of the WAN port on your Airport Extreme.

It's also the case that there's no real advantage to having a static IP address unless you have some specific need for one. For example, if you were using some kind of hardware VPN device that required it, or running a web server.

If you switch to Comcast, you'll be able to just plug the Airport Extreme into the cable modem they provide, and you'll be in business.

I have ATT.

Here's what I do when I need help:

1) when the help answers I IMMEDIATELY ask for the second level tier because the first level people are nearly computer illiterate - they use a dichotomous key book to diagnose your problem (I have a friend who is computer illiterate who worked at this level.)

2) The second level people are more knowledgeable but not extremely. In my experience I am more knowledgeable and I don't consider my self anywhere near Allen's level.

3) The guys who physically come out know the most. But if the problem is your fault/responsibilty they charge you $75+/hr.

4) The supervisors know nothing.

The last time I dealt with them, my router would log on then off continually. The 2nd level guys were telling me it was my Mac, but I protested that my PC wasn't doing it. I also noted that the routers log showed it was doing the logging of and on.

The supervisor (I do not lie) kept telling me that 11k html files were overloading the system!!!

When I finally had them send out a tech BETWEEN the two of us we figured out it had to be the network interface. He found a legacy chipset attached to it that was causing the problem. Since it was on their side of the interface they paid.

Main advantage of static IP besides being able to set up your own server is that when you are remote you are able to access that computer. Not sure what happens to those advantages if you go through a router.

Disadvantage is privacy concerns and static IP provides a stationary target for attacks such as DOS.

I suppose it would be possible to use the computer as primary access to the internet and then use the Airport as an extension of that network (not sure of setup)

Some routers are able to broadcast a MAC address of your choosing. Don;t see the option is airport but might be there.. If that the case ATT doesn't have to know.

Switch to cable and there will likely be a premium if you want to keep a static IP.
If you live in a crowded area, cable can slow down quite a bit during prime time which is whenever people are downloaded bucketloads of stuff
