We tend to not talk about politics in order to keep the peace. Last week, however, he called right after I had heard the latest about Sanders and so, during the course of the conversation, I brought up Sanders name and started talking about him. Suddenly, I heard that catch in my cousin's voice that said his back was up........I realized he thought I was attacking Sanders because he was an R. When I started to explain to him that that was not what I was doing, we got interrupted......there was a problem with one of his patients at the hospital and he had to go. So tonite, I was determined to bring it up and clear the air. After I did that, we start talking about current affairs. My cousin kept lamenting about the poor quality of our leaders ON BOTH SIDES OF THE AISLE. That last phrase was said repeatedly. I didn't bother to point that there are some flakes on the Dem side but the real problem is on the R side. There was no point going down that road with him. Finally, I said to him......you know Obama is not like either side of the aisle. He is much better than that. And while he seemed to agree with that sentiment, I could tell something was bothering him. So I asked him what was going on. Well you know.......my cousin went through some lean years as an intern and a resident, and he's only now starting to make some good money....and he's afraid Obama is going to take it away from him. I reminded him of the tax parameters that Obama has set up and that if he [my cousin] was impacted......the impact would be mild. Instead of assuaging him, he freaked out more. He suddenly said he doesn't know whom to believe. I said what do you mean. He said......well there are different ways you can look at what Obama has said, and a case could be made that he will screw anyone who makes more than $100K per year. He went on and said that in fact, many of the things Obama is saying can be spun [and he used the word spun] in ways that are very different from what Obama is suggesting. And then he brought up the spending and the deficits and was off to the races. Now this is a very well educated man......who is fairly knowledgeable about the world and I realized he is afraid of Obama. I was speechless......I didn't know where to start in responding to him. Its clear that Obama is prompting nearly as much fear in some conservatives as Bush prompted in some of us. I said to him.....I don't know how the two sides got so far apart but this can't go on this way. He agreed. And yet, the bottomline is both sides are afraid of each other. How that can be changed is beyond me. It was a very disturbing conversation.
