I use: "Apple-Shift-4"

and it grabs whatever part of the screen you specify by dragging the mouse about as a .png file; that's a "Portable Network Graphics Image" file

( "Apple-Shift-3" just grabs the whole screen face as a .png file witout mouse help.)
