What is missing from your equation is the massive amounts of shale NG that have been recently (ie in the past few years) been discovered and shown to be economic even at relatively low NG prices

The natural gas is there. The infrastructure could be easily built. And any impediments to NG vehicles are technical in nature. Our own domestic auto companies (meaning Honda and Toyota) would be happy to rapidly develop the necessary technology.

NG is clean, abundant, cheap and it's all ours.
