Also, there will NOT be many cars that are all electric. They will be PHEVs with engines. Engines that require maintenance, just like their non-hybrid brethren. But I will concur that other drive-train issues may be less costly. But we really don't have much data on that.

However, all of this misses a very important point. Most people don't own cars longer than 7 years.

They will if the PHEV winds up costing them twice as much as currently available vehicles.

Especially if these hard times continue for the period that I expect them to (5 years plus).
