It's not conservative vs liberal. The ayatollahs who are protesting Khamenei can also be called ultra-conservative. But they are ultra-conservative from the quietist school of Qom, which is actually the more traditional school of clerical thought, from what I gather. Ayatollah Khomenei was a dissident when he decreed that clerics should rule.
