The unions look out for their people. Google, in buying insurance for its employees, wants to attract the best talent available. As does pretty much everyone else.

You are way too invested in the status quo. Think outside the box; imagine a truly free market for health insurance where millions of individuals make his/her own decision for himself or his family. And every insurance product has to provide the exact benefits that consumer wants at a price he can afford... in competition with 100 other products. Where companies live and die based on their product (like almost every other free market). Think of the innovation that drives through the whole system... providing a better product at a better price wins the day.

The guy at a corporation who makes the plan decision? His first and foremost priority is not to lose his job.
