I agree. Most of the population (Pubs and Dems alike) doesn't know why we are here, and is expecting the V-shaped recovery any day now. I doubt however that Pubs voted against Pubs (McCain) for them having failed to do what should have been done.

I think what Denninger was suggesting was that the Republicans had the opportunity (not to mention responsibility) to prick the RE bubble in its infancy - instead of throwing gasoline on the fire (apologies for mixed mataphor). In doing so they might have advantageously painted the Dems as punchbowl party hounds.

There is no defense for the Pubs. As late as '06 "W" was still touting the "ownership society" and talking about home ownership at 69%.
