“The independent numbers I have seen, public and private, have been relatively steady,” Obama’s senior political adviser, David Axelrod, said in an e-mail.

Beltway Translation: "I have only looked at the most favorable numbers."

Independents have a very small coalition. I could only find two U.S. entries for the "Independent Party" at Wiki. One in Ore the other in Del.

I like the Ore Mission Statement a lot:

Mission

According to its bylaws, the Independent Party of Oregon holds a number of positions. The party wants to increase voter participation and involvement. It advocates reform in specific areas of government, wanting to reduce the advantage of incumbency and the influence of campaign contributions on politicians and policy decisions. Areas it singles out for countering special-interest influence are health, education, welfare, and economic security. The party hopes to achieve this through fiscally sound transparent decisions that create a taxation system that benefits all Oregonians.[17]
