Facing federal embezzlement charges? (Photo: AP)Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, who announced her resignation from office earlier today, may be facing a federal indictment for embezzlement, according to Huffington Post blogger Shannyn Moore

Moore is reporting that the so-called "iceberg scandal" involves the use of Wasilla Sports Complex building materials for Palin's residence during her tenure as mayor.

According to Moore, "Both structures, it is said, feature the same windows, same wood, and same products."

The Daily Kos says federal investigators have been looking into this for some time, and indictments could be imminent.

Getting folks to back off false stories of imminent indictments isn't a vendetta, I think. Since the threat has accomplished its mission, why would they sue?

They won't sue. Constitutional legal doctrine [public figure; NYT v. Sullivan and its progeny] prevents it or makes it extraordinarlily difficult to prevail. As a result, whether they like it or not, big time politicians can be attacked with virtual impunity. Price of putting themselves out in the public arena.

The lawsuit threat is smoke blowing for public consumption. It would be a huge waste of dough. Plus, what is she going to get in return in the near-impossible event she wins? A judgment of say $1 million which the blogger can't pay and another huge bill for legal fees?

The best thing to do with the attack bloggers, from the right and the left, is to ignore them. Reacting to them is futile and self-defeating. Professional pols need to grow thick skins. She hasn't.
