It might be different for USA. Reverse mortgages is sort of symbol of aging baby boomers > Spend the last dime before death

Fast forward to America in 2010, with an elderly dependency ratio of 19%, right around where Japan was in 1990. By 2020, it will rise to 25%, almost as fast as Japan’s.

Not sure this will be true. It all depends upon our immigration policies.

Japan is a homogenous society. They are also fairly xenophobic and don't make it easy for anyone from other countries to gain citizenship.

The USA, on the other hand, is a nation of immigrants. We can also demonstrate that part of the sub-prime mess was selling homes to illegal immigrants, which created quite a demand for the ultimate in "liar loans".

Now.. given that there are still quite a few immigrants willing to look for a better opportunity in the US than they have available in their country of origin, this is a potential future taxpayer base. Japan, on the other hand, will likely never welcome immigrants other than temporary workers. It's very unlikely that they will open up their citizenship laws, let alone foresee the possibility of a descendant of an immigrant rising to become Prime Minister there.

However, I would submit that we really need to crack down on illegal aliens who cannot demonstrate that they have some skill to add to our society and economy.

And they MUST be legitimate immigrants. Enough of this BS where our borders are porous and we don't know who is living here. It's a security risk that we should no ignore.
