"I'm committed to the first stimulus. I don't think it's been given all the time to work. This third quarter is a big quarter for the stimulus," Pelosi told reporters at her weekly presser. Pelosi's position aligns her with Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) and most, if not all, of President Obama's advisers. But many others -- Sen. Chris Dodd (D-Conn.), Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI), Warren Buffett and Timeser Paul Krugman -- think that February's $787 billion package was too small and too diffuse. Pelosi, on the other hand, sees significant stimulative potential in the upcoming transportation spending bill. She did, however, concede that the House may need to consider more spending to help shore up overextended state unemployment insurance systems. "We have to be very careful about the spending on this," she added. "And I respect what -- the open opportunity that the distinguished majority leader put out there, but right now I think that we have big issues with health care and how we fund that, and if we do go someplace, I'd like to see us do the transportation bill." UPDATE: A Hoyer spokeswoman downplayed the daylight between the majority leader and Pelosi: "Hoyer was not suggesting that a second stimulus is needed right now. The recovery bill hasn’t been in place very long, and it needs time to work. He just wasn’t closing the door on future action if that’s what needs to happen to get the economy moving. " Still, the irony here is rich. Hoyer -- the champion of the pay-go, deficit-busting Blue Dog Democrats -- is out in front of Pelosi on possible billions in new deficit spending. Pelosi -- champion of the left and cheerleader for President Obama's first stimulus -- is now portraying herself as an avatar of fiscal responsibility.
