[Opinion] The Google OS Is Doomed

Brief responses to Farhad Manjoo's reasons:

1. Linux is hard to love.

There are millions of users who work with Linux as a desktop system. In the film industry Linux has a market share of 95% on servers and desktops.

We aren't ready to run everything on the Web.

Not everything but more and more.

Microsoft is a formidable opponent.

Microsoft is currently more about defending what has been gained than exploring new frontiers.

Google fails often.

No risk, no fun. Google was very late in the mail game but now Gmail is among the top Web-based mail services.

The Chrome OS makes no business sense.

Of course it does. Regarding the cost side I don't think that developing the OS will be that expensive. As far as possible income sources are concerned there are many options, both direct and indirect ones. Direct income could be premium editions. An indirect benefit could be all sorts of information derived from user statistics which can be used to fine-tune other Google products.
