I remember seeing a political cartoon after LBJ's landslide win over Goldwater in 1964. It showed an emaciated Republican elephant trudging across a desert, with the caption "Which way to the mainstream?" At that moment it would've been difficult to imagine that Richard Nixon would be the next President. Since the FDR/Truman terms, Democrats have never held the Presidency for more than two consecutive terms. Repubs can never win again, they are fragmented, a fallen party.
