Interesting article. The mice studies were done many years ago, and were impressive. These new reports about similar results in primates are fascinating.

....Except that I'm no longer in the mood for that nice dessert after dinner.

It's really an interesting conundrum. Yes I could reduce my caloric intake by 30%-50% and have a 50% chance to live 10 years longer (with no guarantees). But frankly I love good tasting food, and good tasting food generally has lots of calories. Lifestyle vs. longevity?

Bottom line is I would rather eat what I want, when I want, and exercise a LOT.

I believe the brain/DNA is hard wired to store fat, based on 1000's of years of the sporadic, seasonal ability to 'hunt and gather' food. Our ancestor didn't have McDonald's or global trade; in the winter they may have had no food. So we are set up to store fat for hard times... even if it doesn't fit with our current lives. In order to reduce body fat, which is THE killer, you have to trick your brain.

You want a healthier America... get people to do moderate to medium exercise for one hour a day. My guess is it would reduce medical costs by 40%. Problem solved. Diabetes, heart disease, even many cancers reduced dramatically.

You are the doctor... how do we get there? Health care is a huge problem, but health is a bigger problem in this country. This thread would go dead if we could figure out how to get every American to exercise one hour every day.
