Brumar,

the difference is very simple. If the government incubates and ENTIRE industry, like alternative fuels or energy storage for cars to compete against gas ICE cars, then they aren't choosing the solution. However, if they declare that corn ethanol or hydrogen fuel cells are the answer, then I'd object, because they don't have a good track record of choosing the right solution and that's not the best use of our money.

However, incubating the alternative car industry to compete with the gas car industry is ensuring a more competitive car industry that will lead to oil independence. That is a worth goal and the right use of government money and power according to Econ 101.
