Yeah, I've read stuff like that too, which can seriously put in doubt the temperature record. Temperatures taken within urban areas, especially near asphalt can be abnormally high. It's bad science like this that clouds the picture somewhat. Temperatures taken in non-urban areas would be a much better measure.

Having said that. Once you pick a location, regardless of the location, the trend becomes important. If it is trending upwards, no matter where the location is, that tells you something.
