Inode, said family of eight gets around very well in one minivan and one three bedroom house.

As one who once lived through some financial adversity years ago I can tell you that people can get by on a lot less money than they think they can. And most can do it without giving up health insurance or decent food or housing. They may have to give up eating out and vacations, though.

The original point wasn't whether or not you can do OK on that level of income; it's that unlike people who make more, their lives are usually houses of cards, very carefully put together to work out. If my income were to be reduced 10%, I'd be fine. If theirs were, they'd lose everything they have.
