"No people in history," it reads, "have preserved their freedom who thought that by not being strong enough to protect themselves they might prove inoffensive to their enemies."

That's a nice quote from Truman.

Liz Cheney is right - to say that the Cold War ended "because the people of Russia and Eastern Europe stood up and decided" is laughable. We may recall one reason that the USSR fell apart -- when a group of Stalinist old timers attempted a coup, the Special Forces guys refused to obey orders and to execute pro-reform politicians. The rest is history - Boris Yeltsin jumps on a tank, gives a speech, unmolested... and real reforms begin.

Those soldiers refused to commit murder on behalf of their SOB-bosses.

G.W.Bush used to read works by Sharansky -- few people understand so well the nature of totalitarianism, as well as the process of its unraveling. Mr. Obama would be smart to do the same.
