Truff, I'm too gutless to go short or on margin, but if I were that type, I'd watch Etrade for signs of weakness. I have never heard of a happy Etrade customer.

That having been said, the best way to trade in a crunch is usually on the phone to your small broker. A few guys at work have them, and they usually have better luck getting filled when the market goes haywire like today. But often enough on normal days, I'll hear horror stories about how the broker is unavailable when they wanted to trade, so in those cases they lose out completely.

I just pretty much accept that if I want to trade during a heavy part of the day, limit orders are the way to go, and if you miss it, oh well, luck of the draw.
