Obama's policies have people afraid to spend normally and the economy is locking up.

That's what happened in the 30's, as a result of FDR's incessant and unpredictable meddling - at some point private capital simply went "on strike".

During hard times our herding instincts appear to become more active, we seem to find comfort in numbers of people "in the same boat", in togetherness. Those are not bad things per se, but maybe that's one of the reasons that various collectivists and wannabe strongmen always viewed times of uncertainty as opportunities.

Rahm E. kinda sorta nailed it last November -- "You never want a serious crisis to go to waste".
