announced its plans to pay huge bonuses this year.

TJ, How GS pulled this out?

After returning $10 billion in federal bailout money a month ago, Goldman Sachs reported a profit of $3.4 billion, powered in part by its trading operations.

The bank posted the richest quarterly profit in its 140-year history and announced its plans to pay huge bonuses this year.

Xinjiang seems a bit like Northern Ireland, writ large. The IRA created quite a lot of carnage there, with bombings in London, Brighton and elsewhere.

It's not surprising that there is conflict with Moslems in Xinjiang because everywhere there are Moslems there is conflict, including within the purely Moslem zones.

Islamic Jihad is part of the ideology, so true followers are supposed to be Jihadists.

Maybe there is somewhere where there is a territorial interface between Moslems and others where it's hunky dory, friendly and peaceable, but I'm unaware of the place. Where Moslems live in tiny numbers in other countries, they are generally not too bad, [such as in NZ] but where they get a good proportion of the population, it's not so good.

But border conflicts are nothing new. Borders have carnage associated with them all too often, no matter what is on either side of the border, and especially if the border is ill-defined.

I shall now get my globe and see if I can spot some borders which have been problem-free for 100 years in a row.

USA/Canada pretty good. There aren't many.

BHP, Rio Halt Spot Iron-Ore Shipment Bids to China, FT Reports
By Dave McCombs

July 15 (Bloomberg) -- Rio Tinto Plc and BHP Billiton Ltd. have stopped putting spot iron-ore shipments up for bid following the detainment last week of four Rio employees in China on allegations they stole state secrets, the Financial Times reported, citing the Steel Business Briefing consultancy.

The halt in shipments has pushed up prices of the raw material for Chinese steelmakers, the report said.
