In support of his conviction, Stan provided five year currency charts. First, I would argue that currencies are not "everything". Secondly, if we are trend-following we need to be confident that the trend is "current". For the current trend I don't think we need to go back five years nor to 2001 as you might. Arbitrarily, let's use the direction of the 50-day Moving average to indicate the current trend.

Here are a couple of charts that give weight to my nagging doubts:

Whoops... production problems. However they illustrate the current trend (50 day MA) of $gold:$spx and $gold:$copper.
