SS was founded on the same principles. The people who set it up knew it might face demographic problems exactly as it faces today. They designed it to be flexible enough to handle them, and left it up to the congress to do what was needed. If you look at it, they even provided many suggestions for how to handle every eventuality.

You guys claim that you thought your SS contributions were saved for you. I never thought that. But, I was unaware that SS was capped, until the first time my salary exceeded the cap and my check was bigger! At the time, even though I was getting more money, I thought THAT was very unfair. The lower compensated people paying more, as a percentage of their income, than the higher compensated people. I STILL think that sucks.
