*OT* Spain: Oldest Woman to Give Birth With Fertility Treatment Dies at Age 69

Published: July 15, 2009

A Spanish woman who became the oldest woman on record to give birth after she received in-vitro fertility treatment died Saturday at the age of 69, leaving behind 2-year-old twins, newspapers reported Wednesday. The woman, Maria del Carmen Bousada, gave birth just shy of her 67th birthday in December 2006, setting off debate about whether stricter limits should be placed on women’s access to fertility treatment. Dr. Vick Sahakian, who treated Ms. Bousada at the Pacific Fertility Center in Los Angeles, which he owns, reiterated earlier statements Wednesday that she had lied about her age, saying she was 55, when she applied for in-vitro treatment. Dr. Sahakian said he did not treat single women seeking in-vitro fertilization over that age.

It was not clear who would raise Ms. Bousada’s two boys. Diario de Cádiz, a local newspaper, reported that Ms. Bousada’s brother, Ricardo Bousada, said she died Saturday but he did not specify the cause of death.
