Actually, the issue is more complex in certain areas like the Panama Canal, depending on the year you were born. I read quite a bit about the issue in regard to McCain during the primaries, because I was curious.

The point is a major news organization dug deeply into McCain's birth legitimacy, even though he obviously had a passport, served in the military for decades and was for all intensive purposes an open book.
