One of my "fans" sent me some email recently in response to my Y2K hoax thread. Note the well reasoned, intelligent arguments....

To All:
Below we have the other side of the Y2k Extremists we must beware and be ready to neutralize. Not as dangerous as the fear mongers but bothersome especially because they encourage Ignorance of the Issues. It is one thing for Mr. Sharp at Reader's Digest to say Y2k is a Consultant's scheme. That is an informed opinion. (Wrong... but at least informed.)
Wexler is not imformed. It's like reading a Perry Mason summary. You know its fiction but unlike Mason, it's not harmless. In fact, because of the Web's ability to reach so many who do not have the time to become informed, Wexler can do serious,serious harm. And he should pay for that. When you take on a "Position of Trust", it bears with it some serious responsibilities. CPAs know it as: "Fiduciary responsibilities". Like Gary North's misuse of the initials, Ph.D. the CPA carries with it a presumption on the part of the General Public, "Expert". Lawyers would have little problem setting up Mr. Wexler under "implied agency".
I sincerely hope this Wexler, CPA "commentator" is not advising his clients to not check on Y2k potential problems. If he does tell them not to worry, he will :
1. Fail in his fiduciary position should they rely on his "advice" and not check their systems. (I would especially hope its an Accounting Package he recommended that is the source of their woes. Double reason for litigation!!!)
2. Get his loud mouth tail sued off by a former client after 1/1/2000.
In addition, if he is selling his "advice" and someone acts upon it because they believe he is an "Expert", he is even more liable than he wants to know.
I don't think a good Attorney skilled in Y2k will have the slightest problem getting rid of any "disclaimers" Wexler might add to his material. EVEN IF HE DOESN'T TAKE MONEY BUT DOES HARM SOMEONE,,,,,HE IS LIABLE (Case Law : Doctor giving free advice to a friend at a cocktail party who then dies).... (note: I am NOT a Lawyer, Legal advice should always be obtained from a Licensed Attorney. If you do not have an Attorney for your Business and Personal Matters get one or more.((I like Lawyers. They're fun to play with and jerk around especially about matters "Technical".)
THAT will serve Wexler right and he will PAY bigtime for his deNile of Y2k hazards. If anything it's the Big Accountants who are screaming "Fix It Now".
As for his comparison between a misused statistic about missing children and the overall Y2k problem....he wouldn't know WHAT A SCIENTIFIC FACT IS!! Most of us here DO. I DO..(B.Sc.Physics,Chem.and Biology;
Master's Math((Calculus)).
(People who have little or no Scientific Training should be very,very careful before they use the term "Scientific Facts". )
BECAUSE:
When you can prove an "phenomena" exists and reproduce it, one can make some definitive statements about it.
WE know, as he does not seem to know,the Y2k HYPOTHESIS:... ANYONE USING THE FORM MM/DD/YY TO PROCESS INFORMATION has a Year 2000 Problem.
THAT is FACT....MR. WEXLER and his statements below ....ARE FICTION!!
Time after time, we see these self appointed "experts" on Y2k and Wall St. PONTIFICATE using news clippings,rumors and hearsay about Y2k. I prefer J.P. Morgan's simple but elegant: "The Problem is Worse than We Thought". AND... it is for sure Morgan does not know nor care who Mr. Wexler is. IBID: Merrill,Lynch, Goldman Sachs, Pru, Morgan,Stanley, Dr.
Yardini and John Westergaard.
If that is not enough ...how about the FEDERAL RESERVE??? Do they participate in "hoaxes"??? Or the Dept.of Defense, the IRS,the SSI or the GAO??? (Maybe we need to "fix up" Czarina Sally... with Mr. Wexler for a long walk together on the Yellow Brick Road.)
As for his slam on Peter de Jager, ask yourself, who was Tom Peters before he wrote his first book? One book established Peters as an 'expert'. Peter de Jager wrote on paper warning of the consequences of the Y2k Problem and then dedicated his working life to it. Peters would be the first to admit that Individuals and Companies become successful because of their "Passion". If Peter makes 5 million or 1 million or $50 why begrudge that to him. If anyone, he has earned it. (Far more than a BS artist peddling 'opinions' in Cyber Space for $75 U$.)
Now you all know why I, the volunteer Amateur of the Y2k Aware Bunch does not traverse with the "usenet set".
For over one year I have watched the stages of Y2k "awareness" come to the IT/IS PROs as Dr.Kappelman depicts in one article in the Big Book from SIM. Denial, inventory, more denial, reluctant acceptance and then serious worry about "everyone else".
WE, the Y2k Literary Society....KNOW everyone has a BIG problem in Y2k. PERIOD. WE CAN PROVE IT!!!!
What else is there to say?? Why do we have to "educate" the Great Unwashed and critics who have not done their homework????
Just remember,,,, in matters Y2k as to whether there is a major problem to be solved or not......"TIME IS ON OUR SIDE". If they choose to bury their heads in their posteriors and play Couch Potato Experts, that is their priviledge.
To me, it is interesting that a CPA (normally the most Cautious of people) would expose himself in public like this.
But as I've stated repeatedly,,,let the Laggards, the Sloppy, the Ignorant and the Great Unwashed learn. If they do not learn....let them fall by the wayside in the Y2k Induced "Downsizing".
