But we aren't really buying a weapon for today. If we where the F-35 wouldn't be available, and the F-15, F-16, and F-18 would be adequate.

What we buy in now and in the near future will be what we are using 20 or maybe 30 years from now.

The F-22 is better at air-superiority, but it doesn't have a severe lack in terms of being able to drop bombs (at least the fully upgraded units don't). Also if you only considering flyaway costs (and not sunk costs) it doesn't seem like the F-35 will be much cheaper (OTOH if they do build as many as now projected the flyway costs should drop a bit in real terms by the end of the run.)
