Some people apparently want to dance with the risk of a Malthusian episode. I don't get the attraction- but if you believe in the endtimes, maybe Malthus starts to look tamer to you. I dunno. I'm not interested in being part of a Malthusian experiment myself, but if people want that, or don't get that- what can you talk about? If you try to educate people they get offended, or they claim to already be educated- even though it's obvious they have gaping holes in their knowledge, and no ability to evaluate the scientific credentials of the various voices out there.

I was reading a book called the Cult of the Amateur- and I disagree with much of it. But one of the things he does say, which I agree with, is that you can find a coterie of people for any idea- no matter how unscientific- and on the internet you can make up a web site that looks "convincing"- especially for people who want to be convinced. If people can go to the "about" page and not get a little worried when folks are obviously not engaged in scientific work but are pretending to have a scientific site, or when folks have obvious subsidies from big business, that's going to weigh against their credibility. But some folks just can't figure that out.
