In Canada, the government has absolutely no say in who gets care or how they get it.

Each Canadian province has a drug formulary similar to a U.S. HMO formulary. Coverage for drugs not on the formulary are also considered for coverage on a case-by-case basis.

Under the Canada Health Act, each province is required to fund necessary hospital and medical or primary care (i.e., physician) services. Provinces individually decide what to fund beyond what is legally required.

Hospitals are generally non-profit corporations run by a board of directors accountable to the provincial health ministry.
