Snead was one on the top tier of the very best golfers of all time but he could be terrible on the course. I watched Tommy Aaron beat him in a play-off for the Canadian Open. When the play off began everyone was on Snead's side, after all he was a legend and in his 50s. Aaron barely hit a fairway but scrambled for birdies and pars and it drove Sam mad. Snead tried to intimidate him by standing over his shots, hands on hips, and tried all sorts of gamesmanship. In the end Aaron won and by that time I don't think Snead had a supporter left. It was Aaron's first victory after numerous second places On the positive side Snead was a folksy hilly billy(ish) character with a fund of stories and jokes - with one of the great swings of all time, a great athlete who probably started the trend for golfers to be fit - he could do 60 push ups on his finger tips, clapping his hands in between.

During the play off he chewed up his caddy in front of thousands after he missed a putt. The caddy was supposedly the best caddy in the club. On that day at least he wasn't a very nice guy
