I didn't mean destiny in a fatalistic way. I think anyone can adopt whatever culture they want to. Mine is perpetually in flux, as I find better ideas. I'd like everyone to be like that. If, for example, summer break means poor students will lose during their time off, while their wealthy peers do not, then it is obvious we should do away with summer vacation. I am for that, because the evidence shows that we should probably try year round school. School really works for disadvantaged kids according to the studies in Outliers- they actually learn more than the kids with advantages. That's another thing most people don't get. The right repeats so often that schools are failing you almost begin to believe it- what is failing are the families the kids are coming from, so giving kids a long summer break and sending them back to their failing families is a problem. And as the stats in outliers showed, most of the gap between rich and poor could be explained in the losses over the accumulated summer breaks. The kids start out almost even- but after 5 summers, they are quite far behind. Very interesting work. I'd never seen the studies about the loss of knowledge over summer break. Compelling stuff.
