Press release: "Individuals Don't Bail Out, They Buy Stocks To Take Advantage Of Bargains In Stock Market"

From biz.yahoo.com

Louis Thompson, Jr., CEO of the National Investor Relations Institute (NIRI), pointed to the importance of retail (individual) investors in a speech earlier this year.

''While the institutions dominate the market, we must not ignore the needs of the individual investor,'' Thompson told his audience of investor relations specialists. ''The average holding period by institutions is 9 months. Individuals hold their stock an average of 7 years. Individuals could be a very stable force in a bear market or during a major market correction.

''From my perspective serving on the SEC's Chairman's Consumer Affairs Advisory Committee, the Commission is dedicated to efforts that would level the playing field between institutions and individuals,'' Thompson said. ''The more noise individuals raise about not getting the same quality of information as institutions and not having the same trading opportunities, the more likely we will see regulations designed to level the playing field.''
