I have been following and investing in natural gas for maybe twelve years. Although there may be some rebound from current low prices, the fracking of huge formations of tight shale--a technique pioneered only a few years ago in the Barnett Shale by the Mitchell company--appears to have assured a growing supply of natural gas for many years to come. If, however, low prices delay exploitation of these formations, supply may be constrained enough to at least support prices at current levels. A very promising development would be conversion of long-haul trucks to natural gas power--as Boone Pickens suggests. Gas is not as practical for cars because you either have to have a large tank for compressed gas, or else a superinsulated high-pressure tank for liquified gas. I am going to go on holding my Canadian energy trusts but I am not certain enough about what will happen to natural gas prices to add anything right now.
