I think shorter breaks and more of them would be even better for those students. It's certainly worth a try.

Personally I loved my summer vacations--they were for dreaming, working, beaching, dating, staying with extended family members, they taught me more about life.

Lots of pros and cons for this issue.
Agree that there does seem to be something physiologic about a long summer break - OTOH it may just be something we have grown accustomed to, and makes a childhood without one seem like a travesty.
