I think we have led in innovation because we 1. do not have a culture of deference, which means good ideas can be heard no matter who has them (has nothing to do with summer) and 2. we have a very large country with very diverse people and we try to educate them all (as opposed to many countries which just write off certain kids at age 12-15- and shunt them off to trade schools or menial work). While summer may be a great time to "roam around" for the privileged, we can see by the numbers that the kids who have little stimulation at home, no books, no summer camp, fall behind. I don't think any amount of roaming around through an urban or suburban landscape (where the majority of our kids live) is going to do much for our kids in terms of the technical innovations we need for the future. Now sending them to tech camps- THAT would be great.
