I totally agree with that.

I've been showing the film 2 Million Minutes- see below- to my classes for a few years now:

2mminutes.com

I tell the kids "Look, if your parents aren't pushing you, and the school isn't pushing you, push yourselves- because the Indians and Chinese are longing to take your future job. You aren't just competing against the kids in this class, or this country, with globalization you need to realize you are competing against the entire world."

The kids say it is scary, but they appreciate the wake up call. And we talk about how many minutes I have them for (70 a day- except for Weds when it's 50!) and I tell the kids, their education is mostly on them. No matter how great a school is, you can't crack a kid's head open and pour the learning in- you need a partnership. The better the partnership, the better the education.

I give my students suggested enrichment movies and books over each break now, including summer. And tell them to work on their own. Since they are allowed to join my My Space and Facebook, and can email me at home, and have my phone number, if they have any questions about material they can contact me year round. I have never had a student or parent abuse their access to me. Which tells you something about how amazing our kids and parents are :-)
