This is not what he said. Apparently, there is reason to believe the guy was a deserter. Walking away without his weapon is a very strange thing; most soldiers would sooner walk away without their right arms.

But what the colonel said is that if the guy turns out not to be a deserter, that's one thing, but if he is a deserter, the Taliban could save us time and money. Can't argue with it.

I don't think it would be to the military's advantage to be suggesting the guy is a deserter if there weren't some pretty good evidence to that effect.

At any rate, what you said wasn't true. As usual.
