When you look at the top economic growth stories among large players in the last decade, the BRIC countries all have large government roles. Ditto the EU as its collective GDP came to match the US. Ditto South Africa.

Among economies of any size, I have never seen a proven correlation between small government and high growth. Once you get past the mini-states like Singapore and Hong Kong, the correlation falls down.
