As Rambi noted, it's paying homage to the long tradition of rule by old conservative white males, and the political movement behind that, which dates back to Nixon in the modern era.

The fact that history is quickly passing them by and moving on to the next chapter is part of the reason that movement is lost in the wilderness, venting its rage but getting nowhere.

Posner came up when I asked if Green had a more highly qualified liberal nominee than S. in mind. After researching Posner, it struck me as a curious response, not just because he is conservative, which made his name a nonresponsive and unrealistic answer, but because of his age and his positions on some issues that would have appalled the RW, particularly his abortion opinions.
I would guess that's why Bush never went near him. I don't think he was even on the short list.
