Because the bill, if passed unilaterally, will be demagogued by the Republicans for years to come. To ignore that and pretend that the Republicans won't have any leg to stand on would be foolish.

Besides, the (R)'s don't give a damn about helping to pass a bipartisan health care bill that covers uninsured Americans. Their goal is to defeat Obama at something - ANYTHING!
