People get lost in a constantly expanding web of assumptions; they assume a simple formula that explains how all people function and how the entire economy works, then they decide how everyone should behave and the outcomes the assumption maker thinks are best, and poof, we get magic policy prescriptions that must be the best possible thing for everyone.

And then you throw in the Rovian touch and claim that anyone who disgagrees is evil, naive, stupid and weak, and opposed to anything good in the world.

That little model sums up a huge amount of what I read on SI and in op-eds all over the place nowadays.
