Hugh, I may be overstating the problem, but it's hard not to.

Most HPV infections are controlled by the immune system within 12-18 months. That makes most infections "benign" in a sense, but it does expose women to a higher risk of genital warts and cervical cancer.

Also note that HPV is somewhat different than herpes, but the two are connected.
