40 years of working for for profit corporations is the primary basis of my philosophy. The key words in this statement is - for profit.

Oh please, what is it about profit that makes the world real. Is someone paying you to post. According to your definition you seem to have a mega aversion to something that is not part of the real world. Have you ever found a lack of profit easier to deal with on account of it’s non-reality. I run my own business on a daily basis and I can tell you it’s not that easy to shrug off.

I wonder how many of my opponents here have done that.

That's genuinely sad, Bob. Those of us who are trying to have a serious conversation with you are not your opponents. We clearly have different views but one of the great virtues of SI is that it permits conversation across points of view. Civil ones even.

Academics are sheltered from the real world. Government employees are sheltered from the real world.

Absolutely not. Your world is no more real than my world. We each occupy real worlds. They have some different characteristics but they certainly don't make your undefended propositions any truer, any more persuasive. The only thing that does that is the evidence you advance, the clarity with which you write, and the degree to which you try to understand others' arguments and relate yours to theirs.

The for profit industries provide the funding for the others. Their reward is being vilified.

Not here. Moreover, last time I checked my taxes provided the funding for the government. My guess is the taxes of a ton of academics do; and the taxes of a ton of government employees do. Just as the employees in a ton of private enterprises.

It's an an age old conflict Bob and I do understand it. A vibrant American deserves a healthy tension between the two competing interests of profit vs the general welfare out of which comes a resolution we all can hopefully live with.
