I don't think I'll ever forget the Nixon uniforms. A palace guard. Small government Republicans--what a hoot.

And, of course, Nancy Reagan argued that, in contrast to the Carter's frugality, it was important for the Reagans to spend great wads of cash on entertaining in the WH, because the American populace loved and respected pageantry, or some such.

Small government Republicans. Hmmmph.

Isn't it funny how a group that claims that government is useless, awful, unreal and irrelevant, is always clamoring to take over that government and when they do, their leaders make it bigger and grab all the powers they can that suit their agenda?

I think what's worse about government-hating people running the government is that they are pretty much guaranteed to run it badly. Once you get beyond the high profile cabinet jobs, what right-thinking Republican is going to want a government job, when official party dogma badmouths the government at every turn? You end up with people like Michael Brown at FEMA or all the green ideologues right out of college who were sent in to "reconstruct" Iraq.
